Key elements of a Rope Access safe system of work


Proper planning and management

All Rope access work work should be planned and managed by a responsible and competent person in charge of implementing a safe system of work.

  • Rope access should be used when it is appropriate and safe to do so;

  • Risk assessments should identify hazards and implement controls;

  • Work should be planned following a set of written procedures.

  • Written rescue procedures should be in place and all team members understand their roles

  • Work methods should be controlled and documented (communication, tethering of tools, exclusion zones, anchor selection, etc)


proper supervision

All rope access work should be supervised by a competent and qualified supervisor. The supervisors responsibilities are:

  • overall responsibility for the work plan and safe execution of its tasks;

  • hazard identification and control implementation;

  • Rigging plan and execution;

  • Prompt rescue in an emergency.

All supervisors should be First-Aid qualified, have a valid rope access certification and be physically present in visual range throughout the work.


Trained and Qualified technicians

Rope access technicians should be trained and qualified by an independent body, such as IRATA or SPRAT. They should be medically fit and competent to do the task ascribed to them. Their certification should be valid, and the work performed related to their level of proficiency.

All team members should be able to demonstrate:

  • A proper understanding of the work tasks and their roles in performing work;

  • Hazard assessment and controls implemented;

  • Rescue plan roles, procedures, equipment and communication.


Competent selection and use of equipment

All equipment used in rope access should be:

  • Compatible: All components should work together and their interaction and misuse considered;

  • Safe: Is the equipment being used according to manufacturer’s guidance and in good state of repair;

  • Traceable: Is the equipment part of an inventory that can be traced and verified;

  • Regularly inspected: Has all the equipment been inspected thoroughly and at the job site.

All personnel should be trained and familiar with the equipment used, as well as inspect and pre-use checks their PPE to ensure it is safe and being used properly.
